Choosing a place & getting around
Mallorca without a hire car – which places are suitable?
If the beach, restaurants and shops are within walking distance, a hire car becomes an option rather than a necessity.
Peguera has three separate stretches of beach one after the other.
In short
Which Mallorca resorts work without a hire car?
A Mallorca holiday without a hire car works particularly well when the beach, restaurants, shops and transport links are close together. Palma, Playa de Palma, Peguera, Port de Sóller, Alcúdia / Port d’Alcúdia and Cala Millor are particularly suitable.

Do you need a hire car in Mallorca at all?
That depends less on the island than on your holiday style. If you stay in one place for a week, swim there, go out to eat and do one or two excursions at most, you will manage well without your own car in the places mentioned above. If, on the other hand, you want to see lots of different coves, drive into the interior of the island or set off flexibly every day, you will have to compromise without a car.
A middle way is common: choose a resort where you don't need a car and add a hire car for individual days. This works especially well in larger resorts with rental offices on site.
Which Mallorca places work best without a car?
The layout of the place is decisive: if the beach, promenade, supermarket and restaurants are in one connected area, everyday life without a car is relaxed. Places whose hotels are spread over hills or several coves look compact on the map, but in practice mean daily climbs.
-
One stretch instead of many coves
Playa de Palma, Cala Millor and Port d’Alcúdia are organised along one beachfront.
-
Compact town centre
Peguera and Port de Sóller have almost everything in town.
-
City instead of resort
In Palma the city transport network completely replaces a hire car.
-
Scattered locations
In Cala d’Or and Cala Ratjada the hotel location has a big influence on distances.
Where can you reach the beach, restaurants and shops on foot?
Most reliably in Peguera, Playa de Palma, Cala Millor and Port d’Alcúdia: there, supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and the beach are all part of the same town. Port de Sóller and Port de Pollença are also walkable, but feel quieter and have less on offer.
Always check the exact hotel location before booking: even in a walkable place, a hotel can be on the edge of town or above the bay.
Which places are suitable for families without a hire car?
For families, what matters most is that the way to the beach is short and flat and that the supermarket and restaurants can be reached without a car. Alcúdia / Port d’Alcúdia and Cala Millor offer both with a long sandy beach, Peguera scores with very short distances, and Can Picafort is the quieter option on the Bay of Alcúdia.
Which places are suitable for couples without a hire car?
Palma combines food, culture and evening strolls without any travel. Port de Sóller is the quieter option with a mountain backdrop, harbour and tram. Peguera is in between: beach and restaurants on foot, plus several coves in the south-west.
Is Palma suitable without a hire car?
Yes – Palma is the place on the island where a car brings the fewest advantages and parking is the most difficult. The old town, harbour, restaurants and shopping streets are close together, and the city transport network and taxis cover the rest.
Your expectations matter: Palma is not a classic beach resort. If you want to be on a long sandy beach every day, plan for journeys or choose a beach resort.
Is Alcúdia doable without a car?
Within Port d’Alcúdia, yes: the beach, promenade, restaurants and shops are along one stretch, and the historic old town of Alcúdia is a destination in its own right in the same municipality. Without a car, however, excursions to the Tramuntana or the south-east are limited – the rest of the island is a long way from the north.
When does a hire car still make sense in Mallorca?
So a hire car is not superfluous, but a question of travel style. For many travellers, a walkable resort combined with a few days of car hire is the most practical solution.
-
Remote calas
Many small coves are away from the town centres and hard to reach without a car.
-
Island interior
Villages, bodegas and mountain roads are much more flexible with your own vehicle.
-
Several changes of base
If you want to combine the north and the south-east in one trip, a car saves you a lot of time.
-
Spontaneous excursions
Sunrise, the start of a hike or a meal out of town – this works more reliably with a car.
Good alternatives without a car
Also compact enough, but with slightly longer distances depending on the hotel location.
When a car-free resort is less suitable
Less suitable if …
A holiday without a hire car is less suitable if you want to head for new coves every day, explore the interior of the island or combine several regions in one trip.
And with hotels in scattered locations, above a bay or on the edge of town, everyday life without a car can be more tiring than expected.

Frequently asked questions
Can you travel around Mallorca without a hire car?
Yes. If you choose a resort where the beach, restaurants and shops are within walking distance, you will manage well without your own car. For excursions into the interior or to remote coves, a car – even hired for individual days – remains the more flexible solution.
Which Mallorca resort is best without a car?
There is no single best place. For a city break, Palma is the most practical; for a classic beach holiday without a car, Peguera, Playa de Palma, Cala Millor and Port d’Alcúdia are particularly compact.
Is Cala Millor suitable without a car?
Yes. The beach, promenade, restaurants and shops are along one continuous stretch, so everyday holiday life works without a car. For excursions to other parts of the island, however, the east is not a central base.
Is Alcúdia suitable without a hire car?
Within Port d’Alcúdia and for the old town, yes. For destinations in the Tramuntana or the south-east, you should plan organised excursions or a hire car for individual days.
Do you need a car in Palma?
Usually not. In Palma the old town, harbour, restaurants and shopping streets are close together; a car brings little advantage there and also needs a parking space.
How do you get from the airport to your resort?
The usual options are a transfer, taxi, bus or hire car. With package holidays a transfer is included depending on the offer; with a separately booked flight it usually is not – this is stated in the relevant description of services.
