Island centre Es Pla: fincas, markets and wine-growing
Last checked: October 2026
Farmland instead of coast: wineries, weekly markets and fincas – only practical as a base with a hire car, but quiet all year round.
Es Pla only works as a base with a hire car, but it is very quiet.
The short answer
Who is the Es Pla island centre worth it for?
The Es Pla island centre is the agricultural plain between the Tramuntana and the east coast. It stands for wineries around Binissalem, the livestock market in Sineu, monastery hills such as Randa and finca accommodation with no sea access.
What makes Es Pla special
Between dry-stone walls, almond trees and sandstone villages, everyday life goes on independently of tourism. That makes the region quiet and moderately priced – and in winter the only area where practically everything stays open.
Wine, market and monastery
The designations of origin DO Binissalem and DO Pla i Llevant are located here; many bodegas offer tours with tastings. The Wednesday market in Sineu is considered the island's oldest market; Randa and Cura are viewpoint and monastery destinations.
A base with a car
From the island centre you can reach the north, east and south coasts in 30 to 45 minutes. Without a car, only the Palma–Inca–Manacor rail axis works. That makes Es Pla a good base for touring and the off-season, and a poor one for a pure beach holiday.

Frequently asked questions about the Es Pla island centre region
Is the island centre worth it as a holiday base?
Yes for touring, finca holidays and the off-season, because all the coasts can be reached in 30 to 45 minutes. For a pure beach holiday with children, the daily drive to the beach is too long.
Which market in the island centre is the best known?
The weekly market in Sineu on Wednesday morning, traditionally with a livestock market. Other large markets take place in Santa Maria (Sunday) and Inca (Thursday).
Can you visit wineries in Es Pla?
Yes, many bodegas in Binissalem, Santa Maria and around Felanitx offer tours with tastings – usually only by prior arrangement and outside the harvest season.
Can you get to the island centre without a car?
Yes, along the railway line from Palma via Inca to Sa Pobla and Manacor; away from it, a car is practically essential.

Keep comparing
-
Southwest
Short transfer times, city life and marinas: the southwest is the island's best-developed region and works outside the summer months too.
-
Serra de Tramuntana
A UNESCO World Heritage Site of dry-stone walls, olive terraces and mountain villages – the region for hiking and cycling, the weakest for small children at the beach.
-
North
Miles of gently shelving sandy bays with a promenade – Mallorca's classic family region, easy to combine with cycling and nature trips.
-
East
A chain of small calas between pine trees and limestone rock – quiet resorts with holiday flats, marinas and short coastal paths.
-
South
Flat, dry and little built-up: this is where the island's natural beaches are – but the infrastructure is thinner than elsewhere.
