Character of the beach

The cove is part of the Parc Natural de Mondragó and can be reached from the car park via a short woodland path. Next to the main beach lies the second cove, S'Amarador, which is actually a little wider and also shelves gently into the water; the two are linked by a ten-minute coastal path that is easy to walk even with children. S'Amarador has its own car park, which fills up faster than the Mondragó one in high summer. Snorkelling is worthwhile along the rocky edges, because the water stays clear there and seagrass meadows begin. The seasonal difference is marked: from June to September the beach services, kiosk and lifeguards are in operation and both coves are full from late morning; from November to March the nature park is almost empty, but there are no facilities at all. The quietest weeks with everything open are May, early June and October.

Food and drink on the beach

In season, both coves have simple beach restaurants and kiosks serving drinks, bocadillos and standard paella – being a nature park, there is deliberately no promenade dining here. Out of season they are mostly closed. For a proper meal, head to Portopetro, Cala d'Or or Santanyí, all around ten minutes away by car.

Coastal walk in the Mondragó nature park

From the Mondragó car park, waymarked circular trails lead through pine forest, over low cliffs and back and forth between the two coves. The shortest option links Cala Mondragó and S'Amarador in around ten minutes via the coastal path; the longer loop over the cliff sections and the wetland takes one to two hours depending on the route.

The paths are flat to gently undulating, well waymarked and manageable with older children too; sturdy shoes are enough, no mountain gear is needed. As there is hardly any shade on the cliff sections, in high summer you should set off early and take water with you – apart from the beach restaurants, there are no facilities in the park itself.

The big advantage over a classic hike: the swimming break is part of the route. If you walk the loop in the morning, you will have the coastal path largely to yourself and be back at the cove before the car parks fill up.
