Jewellery and pearls from Mallorca: pearl factories and goldsmiths

Last checked: October 2026

Almost every visitor to Mallorca knows the pearls from Manacor – fewer know they are man-made. Alongside them, goldsmiths on the island make traditional Mallorcan jewellery such as botons and the Santa Llúcia eye. Here you will find both.

Quick answer

Where can you buy pearls and handmade jewellery in Mallorca?

Pearls directly from the makers: Majorica in Manacor and Orquídea in Montuïri, both with factory shops. These are man-made pearls with a glass core, not cultured or natural pearls. Handmade gold and silver jewellery is made by goldsmiths in Palma, Pollença, Campos, Cala Ratjada, Sóller, Sa Pobla and Artà – some with the "Moda Artesana de Mallorca" label.

The pearl factories in central Mallorca

  • Manacor · factory and showroom

    Majorica

The process goes back to the German inventor Eduard Heusch; production began in 1890. Each pearl has a core of opaline glass that is dipped 30 to 40 times in a pearlescent liquid, dried and polished. Manacor has the factory and showroom, with a small museum upstairs. Since August 2026 there has also been a shop on Carrer Jaume III in Palma.

Good to know

Mallorca pearls are man-made. That is not a flaw, but you should be clear about it when buying. If someone offers you "real pearls from Mallorca", ask what exactly that means.

Traditional jewellery

Botons and the Santa Llúcia eye

Botons mallorquins are the round decorative silver or gold buttons that belong to traditional Mallorcan dress; today they are also worn as earrings, pendants and cufflinks. The "eye of Santa Llúcia" is the shell lid of a sea snail, considered a lucky charm in Mallorca and set in silver or gold.
