Families Couples Peace and quiet Beach holidays
Cala d'Or is made up of several small coves linked by coastal paths.
Quick answer
Who is Cala d'Or worth it for?
For a quiet beach holiday with small, sheltered coves instead of one long beach – good for couples and families with older children. The resort is a holiday settlement without a real old town and is very quiet in winter. There is no direct scheduled bus from the airport: if you arrive without a hire car, you usually take a taxi or transfer, around 55 minutes.
Cala d'Or is not a village that grew organically, but a holiday settlement begun in the 1930s and later extended. The result is unusually uniform: low white houses, lots of greenery, no high-rises. Instead of a single main beach, swimming is spread over six to eight small calas linked by coastal paths – if you like walking, you can pick a different cove every day.

What makes Cala d'Or special
The chain of coves from Cala Gran to Cala Serena
Cala Gran, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena are just a few minutes' walk apart. They differ in size, shade and crowds – the smaller ones are usually more relaxed in the morning.
Marina de Cala d'Or
One of the largest marinas on the east coast, the starting point for boat hire and coastal tours. In the evening, the harbour promenade is the liveliest part of the resort.
Mondragó Nature Park
A few kilometres to the south, a protected area begins with two unspoilt coves and waymarked circular trails – the most important contrast to the built-up holiday landscape.
Santanyí and the weekly market
The neighbouring town of Santanyí is the most architecturally interesting place in the area, with sandstone houses, galleries and a large market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Which cove suits whom?
| Cove | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Cala Gran | largest cove in the resort, sand, gently shelving entry, facilities within walking distance of the hotels | Families |
| Cala Esmeralda | small cove in the resort, a few minutes' walk from Cala Gran | short swimming breaks |
| Cala Ferrera | sandy cove slightly outside the centre, surrounded by apartment complexes | Accommodation in Cala Ferrera |
| Cala Serena | small, quieter cove next to Cala Ferrera | quiet mornings |
| Cala Egos | its own cove in the western part of the resort, residential character | Peace-seekers |
| Cala Mondragó (Font de n'Alis) | nature park a few kilometres to the south, without hotel development | Nature, snorkelling when the sea is calm |
| Cala Sa Nau | Natural cove with pine trees | Couples, day trip |
The smaller coves are usually more relaxed in the morning; in high summer, everywhere gets full from midday.

Getting there without a hire car
There is no direct scheduled bus from Palma airport to Cala d'Or. The usual solution is a taxi or a pre-booked transfer, around 55 minutes for the roughly 60 kilometres.
By bus, you go via Palma: take airport bus A1 into the centre and from there TIB express line 515e, which since June 2025 has connected Cala d'Or, Cala Egos, Portopetro and Santanyí with Palma without changing in Campos – Monday to Friday with five journeys in each direction (as at launch). Check timetables in advance at tib.org.
In summer 2026, from 24 April, seasonal TIB lines also ran from Cala d'Or to Porto Cristo and to Cala Mondragó.
Everything in the resort itself is within walking distance. For trips inland, to Santanyí or to Es Trenc, a hire car for individual days is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions about Cala d'Or
Which cove in Cala d'Or is best for families?
Cala Gran is the largest and widest cove, with sand, a gently shelving entry and facilities right on the beach – usually the most practical choice for families. Cala Ferrera is similar but somewhat smaller.
Is Cala d'Or noisy?
No, compared with Magaluf or Playa de Palma the resort is quiet. In the evening, life centres on the harbour and the main street; party tourism plays practically no role.
How do you get from Cala d'Or to Palma?
By hire car, the drive takes around an hour via the Ma-19. By bus, TIB express line 515e runs to Palma without changing, Monday to Friday; other connections via Felanitx or Campos take considerably longer.
Is there a bus from the airport to Cala d'Or?
Not a direct one. Either a taxi or transfer (around 55 minutes) or bus A1 to Palma and then on with TIB express line 515e (Monday to Friday).
Which cove in Cala d'Or is the quietest?
The small coves such as Cala Serena or Cala Egos tend to be, especially in the morning. The Mondragó Nature Park, a few kilometres to the south, has no development at all.
Is Cala d'Or worth it outside the season?
Only to a limited extent: the resort is highly seasonal, and in winter many restaurants and hotels are closed. For an off-season holiday, Palma is the better choice.
