Quick answer

Is Mallorca a good hiking destination?

Yes – especially outside high summer. The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers everything from easy coastal paths to demanding summit hikes. The main season for hikers is October to May; in July and August, longer hikes only make sense early in the morning because of the heat.

GR 221 – Ruta de Pedra en Sec

The dry-stone route crosses the Serra de Tramuntana over around 140 kilometres in eight stages from Port d'Andratx to Pollença. You stay overnight in simple mountain huts (refugis) or in the villages along the route. If you do not walk the whole route, choose individual stages as day hikes – the sections around Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller are easy to reach by bus.

The refugis should be booked early in the main hiking season. After heavy rainfall, individual sections may be closed.

Equipment

Sturdy hiking boots with good tread, at least two litres of water per person, sun protection, a rain jacket in winter and an offline map. In the Tramuntana, mobile reception is weak in places.
