A day in Alcúdia: town walls, Roman city and evening light over the bay
Last checked: October 2026
A day trip planned hour by hour: market between the walls, up onto the ramparts, through the ruins of Pollentia, the shallow beach in the afternoon – and the La Victòria peninsula in the evening.
Quick answer
Is a day trip to Alcúdia worth it?
Yes – within a short distance Alcúdia combines a walled old town, Mallorca's most important Roman excavation and one of the island's shallowest beaches. A Tuesday or Sunday is ideal, when there is a market in the old town. Without a car, TIB bus 302 runs from Palma; you only need a car or taxi for the La Victòria viewpoint in the evening.

The day plan
Alcúdia in one day – how it works
-
By bus to the north
Line 302 runs from Palma via Inca to Alcúdia and on to Port d'Alcúdia. Get off at the old town. By car, there is a large car park right by the town wall next to the church of Sant Jaume.
-
Market between the walls
On Tuesdays and Sundays there is a weekly market in the old town, roughly 08:00 to 13:30: olives, cheese, sobrassada, pastries, crafts. On market days the cafés on the edge are a better break than a restaurant.
-
Up onto the walls
Work on the town walls began in 1298 under King Jaume II. Two gates survive: the Porta de Mallorca (also Porta de Sant Sebastià) and the Porta del Moll on the harbour side. You reach the walkable section of the ramparts at the Porta de Sant Sebastià. Free.
-
Church and museum
The church of Sant Jaume is part of the fortifications. The earlier building collapsed in 1870; the present neo-Gothic church was completed in 1893. Right next door, the Museu Monogràfic shows finds from Pollentia in a 14th-century building – the excavation ticket is valid here too.
-
Through the Roman city
Just outside the old town lie the remains of Pollentia, founded after the Roman conquest of the Balearics in 123 BC: the Sa Portella residential quarter, the forum and, a little to the south, the theatre carved into the rock in the 1st century. Tickets are sold only at the excavation entrance. Sturdy shoes, little shade.
-
Lunch inside the walls
In the old town you eat more Spanish and usually cheaper than at the harbour: celler cooking in stone vaults with frit mallorquí and arròs brut, or tapas around the square.
-
Afternoon on the shallow beach
The beach is around two kilometres from the old town, 20 to 30 minutes on foot or by local bus. The bay shelves so gently that you can walk a long way out. The beach is wide, pale and around 3.4 kilometres long.
-
Ermita and Mirador de la Victòria
On the peninsula north of Alcúdia stands the fortress-like Ermita de la Victòria, with a free car park. From the Mirador next to it you look across the Bay of Pollença to the Tramuntana. Restaurante Mirador de la Victòria is right by the hermitage. You need a car or taxi to get here.
-
Dinner at the harbour
The harbour of Port d'Alcúdia is where the town's restaurants line up – from fish and seafood at Ca'n Matevet to the refined Mallorcan cooking of Maca de Castro.
-
Back to Palma
Line 302 runs back via Alcúdia and Inca to Palma. Check the last departure on tib.org in the morning.

Variations
Adapt the day
-
With children
The shallow beach is the main event. Old town and walls in the morning, then straight to the water; keep the excavation short.
-
For hikers: Coll Baix
On the La Victòria peninsula, the pebble cove of Coll Baix lies between high cliffs. From the car park it is about 45 minutes on foot; the long route over the Talaia d'Alcúdia is around 13 kilometres with 720 metres of ascent. No facilities, little shade.
-
S'Albufera nature park
Behind the beach lies the largest wetland in the Balearics, with flat paths and bird hides – a quiet afternoon instead of the beach, on foot or by bike.
-
If it rains
The Museu Monogràfic is small but under cover. The Museu Sa Bassa Blanca, with its art collection and sculpture park, fills more time – visits by reservation only.
-
Combine with Pollença
Bus 322 connects Port d'Alcúdia with Port de Pollença and Pollença. If you want both, do Alcúdia's old town in the morning and Pollença in the afternoon.
-
For golfers
Club de Golf Alcanada lies on the coast with views of Alcanada island and its lighthouse.
In winter
From November to March many hotels and restaurants on the beach and at the harbour close. More stays open in the old town; the market, walls and excavation work all year round.
