Cap de Formentor
Last checked: October 2026
The northern tip of Mallorca is one of the most spectacular excursions on the island – and, because of the access rules in high season, the one where planning pays off most.
In high season the road to the lighthouse is closed to private cars during the day.
Quick answer
What can you expect at Cap de Formentor?
A narrow peninsula around 20 kilometres long with steep cliffs, viewpoints, a sandy beach and the lighthouse at the northern tip. The MA-2210 panoramic road leads from Port de Pollença via the Mirador Es Colomer to the Far de Formentor. In high season the road is closed to private cars during the day; shuttle buses run instead. TIB bus line 334 Alcúdia–Formentor runs seasonally alongside the restriction (2026: 15 May to 18 October).
Access and closure times
The restriction applies to the MA-2210 from Port de Pollença (2026: 15 May to 18 October, daily 10:00–22:00): private cars may drive to the car park at Platja de Formentor only while spaces are free there; the section from the beach to the lighthouse is open to authorised vehicles only. The period and times are set anew each year: the signs on site and the current announcement by the Consell de Mallorca are what count. Outside the closure times – early in the morning, in the evening and in the low season – access with your own vehicle is unrestricted.
| Stop | Time | What is there | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirador Es Colomer | 20–30 min | Viewing platform above the rocky islet of Es Colomer, view of the cliffs | Small car park, arrive early or late |
| Talaia d'Albercutx | 30–45 min | Old watchtower with a panoramic view over both bays | Narrow, unsurfaced spur road; nicer on foot |
| Platja de Formentor | 1–3 hrs | Sandy beach with pine shade and a view of the Tramuntana | Boat landing stage from Port de Pollença, own car park |
| Far de Formentor lighthouse | 30–60 min | Northern tip of the island, view as far as Menorca when it is clear | End of the road, car park fills up quickly in summer |
Driving on the MA-2210
The road is surfaced but narrow, winding and without crash barriers on the exposed sections. Coaches take up the full width on the hairpin bends. If you are a nervous driver, take the shuttle or the boat. Motorhomes and larger vehicles are generally ill-suited to the peninsula.
When the trip is most worthwhile
In the low season between October and April, the peninsula is open to traffic and much quieter – wind and waves on the north coast then make the trip even more impressive. In summer, early morning remains the best option.

Check the current rules
The access rules are adjusted every year and can also change within a season. Before you set off, it is worth checking the notices on site or at reception – that way you avoid having to turn back at the closed section.

Frequently asked questions about Cap de Formentor
Can you drive to Cap de Formentor?
In high season, an access restriction for private cars applies during the day (2026: 15 May to 18 October, 10:00–22:00) on the MA-2210 from Port de Pollença; only authorised vehicles may then continue to the lighthouse. Outside these times and outside the season, access is unrestricted. The exact periods are set anew each year and should be checked shortly before you go.
How do you get to the lighthouse without a car?
By shuttle bus from Port de Pollença or Alcúdia during the restriction periods, or by excursion boat from Port de Pollença to Platja de Formentor. Taxis and guided tours are also permitted. TIB bus line 334 Alcúdia–Formentor runs seasonally alongside the restriction (2026: 15 May to 18 October).
How long does the trip take?
For the drive from Port de Pollença with stops at the Mirador Es Colomer and the lighthouse, allow half a day – correspondingly longer with a swim at Platja de Formentor.
What is the best time of day?
Early morning and late afternoon. The light on the cliffs is better then, the viewpoints are quieter and the car parks at the lighthouse are not overcrowded.
Is there food and drink at the cape?
At the lighthouse there is a small food and drink outlet with seasonal hours. To be on the safe side, take water with you – otherwise there is nothing on the peninsula.
