Beaches & coves on Mallorca

Last checked: October 2026

Find Mallorca's beaches by location, character, facilities and personal requirements.

In brief

How do the coasts differ?

The north offers long, gently sloping sandy beaches, the east small rocky coves with sand, the south undeveloped natural beaches with little infrastructure, and the north-west pebble and rocky coves set in steep cliffs. If you are travelling with small children, head north; if you want to snorkel, go east or south-east.

Frequently asked questions

Which beach on Mallorca is best for small children?

Platja de Muro and Playa de Alcúdia in the north slope gently over an unusually long distance and have infrastructure right on the beach. In the south-east, Cala Llombards is a sheltered, smaller alternative with afternoon shade.

Which beaches can be reached without a hire car?

Reachable by bus or on foot are, among others, Platja de Palma, Cala Major, Playa de Alcúdia, Platja de Muro, Cala Agulla and – by shuttle or boat – Formentor. Natural coves such as Cala Varques can hardly be reached sensibly without a car. The Alcúdia–Formentor bus line ran seasonally in 2026 from 15 May to 15 October.

Where is there shade on the beach on Mallorca?

Tree shade directly behind the sand is rare. Platja de Formentor, with pines on the sand, is the best-known exception, along with Cala Mondragó and partly Cala Llombards. At Es Trenc and the long northern beaches there is practically no natural shade.

When are the beaches at their busiest?

Between 11:00 and 16:00 in July and August; at natural beaches also limited by full car parks. Early in the morning or from late afternoon onwards the difference is clear at almost all beaches.
