Cycling on Mallorca
From training island for road cyclists to flat family loop behind the bay of Alcúdia: season, choice of base and routes with a realistic level of difficulty.
Quick answer
Why is Mallorca a cycling destination?
Three types of terrain meet within a short distance: the hairpin bends of the Serra de Tramuntana, the flat plain of Es Pla and the coastal roads in the north and east. Add to that mild winter months, a dense network of hire stations and hotels that offer bike storage, early breakfast and workshop service. The main season is therefore not summer but spring.
Where best to start
Port de Pollença and Alcúdia are the most common bases: from there you can reach Cap de Formentor, the start of the MA-10 and the flat loops inland without a transfer. In the south-west, Peguera takes on this role, with access to Andratx, Estellencs and Galilea. If you mainly want to ride on the flat, Can Picafort or Playa de Muro are good choices.
| Route | Profile | Start | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cap de Formentor | approx. 40 km, rolling profile | Port de Pollença | moderate – short, steep ramps |
| Sa Calobra | approx. 10 km climb, around 800 m of ascent | Coll dels Reis / MA-10 | high – a classic test |
| Sóller–Deià–Valldemossa coast road | approx. 55 km, constant ups and downs | Sóller | moderate to high, heavy traffic in summer |
| Loop through Es Pla | 50–80 km, largely flat | Alcúdia or Sineu | low – ideal for beginners and e-bikes |
| Bay of Alcúdia cycle path | 10–25 km, flat and car-free | Port d'Alcúdia | very low – suitable for families |
Your own bike or a hire bike?
For a stay of one week, hiring is almost always the simpler solution: the stations in Port de Pollença, Alcúdia, Palma and Peguera provide road, gravel and e-bikes including helmet, pedals and breakdown service. If you bring your own bike, check the airline’s bulky baggage rules and transport from the airport in advance – a bike case rarely fits into a small car.
Practical tips
- Start early: from late morning, heat and traffic increase noticeably.
- Take water – in the mountain sections there are long stretches between supply points.
- In the Tramuntana it is cool in the mornings in spring; pack a wind vest.
- On the MA-10, tunnels and tight hairpins alternate: lights on your bike make sense.
- Under Spanish rules, groups ride two abreast; fall into single file at narrow points.

Frequently asked questions about cycling on Mallorca
When is the best time for cycling on Mallorca?
February to May and September to October. Temperatures are pleasant then, the roads are less busy and the hotels in the north cater for cycling guests. In July and August it is too hot on the climbs.
Which town is suitable as a base?
Port de Pollença and Alcúdia in the north are the classic bases, because the Tramuntana and the flat hinterland are right on the doorstep. In the south-west, Peguera is a popular alternative.
Do you need your own bike?
No. There is a dense network of hire stations on the island with road, gravel and e-bikes including pedals, helmet and service. This saves transport costs and bulky baggage.
Is Sa Calobra doable for leisure cyclists?
The descent is easy; the return with around 800 metres of ascent in one go is not. If you have no mountain experience, plan the coast road to Deià or the flat loops inland instead.
How safe is cycling on Mallorca?
The island is geared up for cyclists, many roads have hard shoulders and drivers are used to groups. Narrow mountain sections with coaches and the access roads to the hotel zones in summer remain critical.
