The best time to visit Mallorca

Month by month: weather, crowds, price level and what each period is good for.

Quick answer

When is the best time to visit Mallorca?

For a beach holiday, June and September are ideal: the sea is warm, temperatures are more bearable than in high summer and it is less crowded than in August. March to May and October are good for hiking and city breaks. July and August are the hottest, most expensive and busiest months; November to March are the quietest, with a reduced choice of hotels.

Best time by type of holiday

  • Beach holiday

June to September. The sea is at its warmest in September, while the air is already becoming more bearable.

  • Hiking & active holidays

March to May and October. In high summer, the Tramuntana routes are too hot around midday.

  • Families

June and September, if the school holidays allow; otherwise July and August with a hotel on a shallow beach.

  • Partying

May to September, with openings in spring and closings in autumn.

  • Peace and quiet

November to March – but with a reduced choice of hotels and restaurants on the coast.

  • Culture & festivals

All year round: Sant Antoni in January, Easter in spring, village festivals in summer, Dijous Bo in November.

High and low season

The high season runs roughly from mid-June to mid-September, peaking during the German school summer holidays. During this period, flights, hotels and hire cars are at their most expensive and beaches and roads at their busiest – but everything is open.

The low season from November to March is the cheapest and quietest time, although many beach hotels in the north and east close. Palma, the Tramuntana villages and the centre of the island, on the other hand, work all year round.

For many people, the shoulder seasons of April/May and October are the best compromise: infrastructure is open, prices are moderate and temperatures are pleasant for excursions.

When to book?

  • Holiday periods

Book early. Family rooms and direct flights during the summer holidays are the scarcest commodity of the year.

  • Shoulder seasons

A medium lead time is usually enough. If you are flexible about your departure airport, this is where you save the most.

  • Low season

Can be booked at short notice – check whether the hotel and restaurants at your destination are actually open.

  • Spontaneous

Last-minute allocations are mainly worthwhile for package holidays, less often for flight-only bookings.

Frequently asked questions

When is the sea warmest in Mallorca?

The Mediterranean around Mallorca reaches its highest temperatures in late summer; September is considered the most pleasant month for swimming, because the water has stored the summer heat.

When is Mallorca cheapest?

From November to March, and in spring outside the Easter holidays. The biggest price difference is between the German school summer holidays and the rest of the year.

Is Mallorca worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for city breaks to Palma, for hiking and for festivals such as Sant Antoni. A beach holiday is not realistic in winter, and many beach hotels are closed.

When do the almond trees blossom in Mallorca?

The almond blossom usually falls between late January and late February, depending on the weather and altitude. It is densest in the interior of the island.
