Car hire on Mallorca – compare, choose and avoid typical cost traps

First the honest question: do you need a car at all? Then the points where car hire on Mallorca regularly leads to extra costs.
In brief
Do I actually need a hire car on Mallorca?
For flexibly exploring the Tramuntana, remote coves and rural fincas, a car is practical to essential. For a pure beach holiday in a well-connected resort, on the other hand, you can often do without one – there, buses and trains are enough, supplemented by two to three days of car hire for excursions.
Do I actually need a hire car on Mallorca?
- If you are staying in a well-connected place such as Palma, Playa de Palma or Alcúdia, buses and trains are usually enough for everyday needs.
- If you are planning trips into the Tramuntana or to remote coves in the south and east, or are staying in a finca inland, a hire car is practically a must.
- For individual excursion days, a hire car for one or two days is often enough instead of for the whole trip.

Broker or direct rental company – what is the difference?
A broker or agent sells a rate from a local rental company under its own brand – so the contracting party when you collect the car locally may be a different company from the booking site. A direct rental company is the car hire firm itself, with which you also have the contract directly on site. Both models have advantages and disadvantages; what matters is knowing the conditions of the actual rental company, not just those of the booking site.
Excess, deposit and extra cover – how they fit together
- The rental company's comprehensive cover usually has an excess: you pay for damage up to this amount yourself.
- A deposit of this excess amount is often blocked on your card at pick-up.
- Three ways to reduce the risk: (1) extra cover directly from the rental company on site, which reduces the excess to zero and often also removes the deposit; (2) a complete package via an agent, where the excess is reimbursed in the event of damage – the deposit may still be blocked on site; (3) a separate excess insurance policy from a travel insurer, also available as an annual policy for frequent travellers.
- Glass, tyres, underbody, roof and keys are often excluded or covered separately – the small print of the specific rate is what counts.
Which option is cheaper depends on the rental period, vehicle class and rate – check the conditions of the actual rental company before booking.
Two rules drivers should know for 2026/27
Palma low-emission zone from 1 January 2027
The centre of Palma within the Avenidas is a low-emission zone. From 1 January 2027 only vehicles with a C, ECO or 0 sticker are permitted there; vehicles with foreign number plates must be registered in the municipal register in advance. With a hire car, it is best to ask the rental company about the sticker – and in Palma use a car park on the edge of the old town anyway.

Formentor: closure to private cars in season
From 15 May to 18 October 2026, the road onto the Formentor peninsula is restricted daily from 10:00 to 22:00: to the beach car park only while spaces are available, to the lighthouse only authorised vehicles. The alternative is TIB bus line 334 from Alcúdia and Port de Pollença (source: DGT). It runs seasonally alongside the restriction (2026: 15 May to 18 October).
Providers at a glance: brokers and direct rental companies
| Provider | Role | What this means for renters |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny Cars | Broker with its own complete package | Bundles an all-round worry-free package with comprehensive cover and reimbursement of the excess, unlimited mileage and a fair fuel policy, based on local partner rental companies. Whether and in what form a deposit must be left on site depends on the local rental company and rate. |
| CHECK24 / billiger-mietwagen.de | Price comparison portals | Bundle offers from various brokers and direct rental companies. Terminal or shuttle, fuel policy, deposit and card requirements depend entirely on the individual offer chosen, not on the portal itself. |
| Provider | Airport pick-up | Card for the deposit | Rate and fuel notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wiber | Off-site station, approx. 5 minutes by free shuttle (QR queuing system); also the “Smart Car” rate with direct pick-up in the airport car park | Credit or debit card in the driver's name accepted | All Inclusive: no excess, no deposit, including Wikey Smart Box (key collection without a counter). Full/Full: basic rate with excess. |
| Centauro | Off-site airport station with free shuttle; according to its own website, check-in starts during the shuttle ride | Card requirements vary by rate | Excess, deposit and conditions differ by rate. For certain complete rates booked directly, Centauro advertises rental without a deposit and without an excess. |
| Record Go | Contract issued in the terminal, vehicle collected in the car park opposite, shuttle if you provide your flight number | Debit cards are accepted (personal, must be presented physically) | The “Just Go Rate” includes cover that removes the need for a deposit. According to its own website, refunding a deposit can take up to 30 working days. |
| Sixt | Own rent-a-car area at the airport | Credit and debit cards possible, depending on country, station and vehicle class | With a credit card the deposit amount is blocked; with a debit card (Maestro/V PAY) it is debited immediately and refunded after return. Deposit amount depends on vehicle class. |
| Hertz | Station in the terminal, open 7:00–22:59 | Credit card in the driver's name required | “Pick up full, return full” fuel policy (Full/Full). |
| Europcar | Station in the terminal arrivals area | Credit card required (Mastercard/Visa/Amex/Diners); according to its own website, debit cards are not accepted | Three fuel options: same fuel level at pick-up and return (free of charge), return with less fuel for a fee, or prepayment for a full tank. |
| OK Mobility | Own building directly on the airport grounds, no shuttle needed, available around the clock | Visa, Mastercard and Amex listed, no explicit statement on debit cards for the deposit | Full/Full fuel policy. Deposit model not specified on the page checked. |
| Goldcar | Counter in the arrivals terminal, plus “Key’n Go” self-service kiosk | Official information is not consistent throughout – check the accepted card type for the specific rate before booking; do not plan on prepaid cards as a standard means of payment for the deposit | With “Super Relax” insurance, according to its own website, no deposit is charged to your card. |
Note on the provider overview
This overview is purely editorial and contains no booking links to the individual brands. Conditions may change and can differ depending on the booking channel – always check the information of the actual rental company before booking.
Which type of booking suits whom?
- The most comprehensive, clearly defined insurance cover possible: check complete packages such as Sunny Cars “all-round worry-free”, Wiber “All Inclusive” or Record Go “Just Go Rate”.
- Pure price comparison with a large selection: price comparison portals such as CHECK24 or billiger-mietwagen.de.
- Direct terminal pick-up without a shuttle: providers with a station in the terminal building.
- As little deposit as possible: search specifically for deposit-free complete packages.
- Debit card instead of credit card: confirm individually before booking which provider currently allows this.
- Family or large vehicle: see the vehicle section for choosing the class, and choose the provider independently of that.
Airport or resort? And: terminal or shuttle?
All the major providers are represented at Palma Airport; some stations are outside the terminal and reached by shuttle. That costs time after an evening flight. If you are staying in Alcúdia or Cala d'Or and only planning excursions, rent locally: shorter distances, no parking fees at the hotel and no motorway drive on the day you arrive.
At the airport itself there is a second question: terminal station (counter in or right next to the arrivals area) or off-site station with a shuttle bus. Terminal stations are usually quicker to reach; off-site stations sometimes offer cheaper rates or complete packages – but with a wait for the shuttle, especially in high season. All the details of the process are on the page Car hire at Palma Airport.
Which car suits my Mallorca holiday?
Small car
Ideal for couples, short trips and anyone spending a lot of time in Palma, Sóller or other old towns with narrow streets and tight car parks.
Estate or compact SUV
A good choice for families with one or two children and more luggage, comfortable on longer journeys on the island's motorways. However, an SUV is not automatically the better choice for the narrow, winding roads of the Tramuntana – there, a more compact vehicle is often more pleasant to drive through the narrow hairpin bends and tight passing places.
7-seater
For groups and large families with lots of luggage – more unwieldy on narrow village streets and in small car parks. Book early; availability on the island is limited.
Convertible
A car for enjoying the coastal roads, but with little boot space – unsuitable for travellers with lots of luggage.
What determines the real hire car price?
The final price is not determined by the advertised daily rate but by: travel period (high or low season), vehicle class, pick-up location (terminal station or off-site station with shuttle), chosen insurance and excess, deposit model, fuel policy, additional drivers, child seats and cancellation conditions. The actual price only emerges in a direct comparison for your desired travel dates – see the comparison above.
Insurance and excess
In Spain the basic rental includes third-party liability and usually collision cover with a high excess. There are two ways to protect yourself: comprehensive cover without excess directly from the rental company, or a cheap basic rate plus separate excess insurance. The second option is often cheaper on paper, but means paying upfront in the event of damage. Components, exclusions and sample calculations are on the page Insurance & excess.
Credit card and deposit
Most direct rental companies require a credit card in the main driver's name at pick-up. Some providers also accept debit cards (see provider overview above), sometimes with an immediate charge instead of a block. If you do not have a credit card or do not want a high deposit blocked, you should filter specifically for this or book a deposit-free complete package. All scenarios and alternatives: Car hire without a credit card or deposit.
The most common mistakes with car hire on Mallorca
- Extra insurance at the counter despite already having cover through a broker or pre-booking – clarify before the trip what your own booking covers.
- Full/Empty fuel policy instead of Full/Full – pre-calculated fuel and service fees usually make it more expensive.
- Bringing the wrong type of card for the deposit, i.e. a debit card instead of the required credit card.
- Card limit too low for the required deposit amount.
- Existing damage to the vehicle not documented at pick-up.
- Underestimating the shuttle time to the off-site station in high season.
- Booking an additional driver or child seat only at the counter instead of in advance.
- Late return without prior arrangement.
- Reading only the booking site's conditions, not those of the actual rental company on site.
Parking and roads
In Palma, paid parking zones apply; blue markings are paid, white ones free, yellow ones prohibited. In resorts, hotel car parks often charge a fee. At natural beaches there are managed car parks with limited capacity. The mountain roads of the Tramuntana are narrow and winding – uncomfortable for large vehicles.
The right hire car in 4 steps
- Check whether you need a hire car at all or whether buses and trains are enough for your planned trip.
- Compare the total price and conditions, not just the daily rate.
- Clarify insurance, excess and deposit model before booking.
- Document the vehicle fully at pick-up and return, with photos or video.
| Point | What to look out for |
|---|---|
| Type of rate | Comprehensive cover without excess vs. basic rate plus external insurance |
| Deposit | Amount, credit card requirement, release after return |
| Fuel policy | Prefer Full/Full, plan for a petrol station near the airport |
| Mileage | Unlimited or limit per day |
| Additional driver | Is there a charge? Have both drivers registered |
| Child seats | Reserve in advance; check whether you can bring your own seats |
| Pick-up location | Close to the terminal or shuttle – relevant for late arrivals |
| Damage report | Photograph existing damage, including roof, wheel rims and underbody |

Frequently asked questions about car hire on Mallorca
Do you need a hire car on Mallorca?
Not always. In Palma, Alcúdia, Port de Pollença, Peguera and Sóller, the beach, shops and restaurants are within walking distance, supplemented by buses and trains. A hire car is worthwhile for natural beaches, mountain roads and the interior – often a few individual rental days are enough.
Airport or hotel: where should you pick up the car?
The choice is greatest at the airport, and pick-up does not depend on office hours. If you are only planning two days of excursions, renting locally in your resort is cheaper and less stressful, and you save parking fees at the hotel.
Which insurance makes sense?
The excess is what matters. Either comprehensive cover without excess directly from the rental company, or separate excess insurance. With the latter, damage is first charged and later reimbursed.
How high is the deposit?
The amount depends on the rate: with comprehensive cover without excess it is usually low; with basic rates it corresponds to the excess. As a rule, a genuine credit card in the driver's name is required.
Which fuel policy is best?
Full/Full is the fairest option: you pick the car up with a full tank and return it with a full tank. Full/Empty rates charge a flat rate for fuel and are almost always more expensive.
From what age can you rent?
The usual minimum age is 21 with at least one year of holding a driving licence; under 25 a young driver surcharge often applies.
Broker or direct rental company – what is the difference for me as a renter?
With a broker, the contracting party on site is a different company from the booking site; it is important to know the conditions of the actual rental company. With a direct rental company, you book directly with the car hire firm itself.
Is a small car enough on Mallorca?
For one or two people and for driving in old towns or in the Tramuntana, a small car is often the most practical choice; for more luggage or more people, an estate or a larger vehicle is better suited.
What does the “Full/Full” fuel policy mean?
You pick the vehicle up with a full tank and return it with a full tank – so you only pay for the fuel you actually used at the normal petrol station price, without a surcharge.
Do I need a credit card for a hire car on Mallorca?
With many rental companies, yes, for the deposit in the driver's name. Some accept debit cards or offer rates without a deposit – be sure to check this with the specific provider before booking.
Which is better: extra cover from the rental company or separate excess insurance?
Extra cover from the rental company usually saves you the deposit, but is often more expensive; separate insurance reimburses you in the event of damage, but the deposit is still blocked. The rental period and conditions are what count.
Can I drive into Palma with a hire car?
From 2027, only with a C, ECO or 0 sticker into the low-emission zone within the Avenidas; parking spaces in the old town are scarce.
