Hire car in Mallorca without a credit card or without a deposit

Two different concerns, one decision at pick-up – here the two are set out separately side by side.

Deposit and card type are checked at pick-up, not when you book.

The short answer

Can you hire a car in Mallorca without a credit card or without a deposit?

Most large rental companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name at pick-up, on which the deposit is reserved as a blocked amount. Some local rental companies accept debit cards or a cash deposit, and “no deposit” offers usually work via fully comprehensive cover with no excess booked in advance – in return, the rental price is higher.

Hire car without a credit card

The credit card serves as the rental company’s security for the deposit, fuel and possible damage. Some local Mallorcan rental companies accept debit cards or a cash deposit instead; some international brokers offer special “no credit card” rates with a surcharge or prepayment of fully comprehensive insurance.

Important: “no credit card” is often linked to a higher excess or additional proof. So read the conditions before you book, not at the desk.

Hire car without a deposit

The deposit is a blocked amount – often 500 to 1,500 euros depending on vehicle class – which is released again when the car is returned undamaged. “No deposit” offers usually work via fully comprehensive insurance with no excess booked in advance; in return, the rental price itself is higher.

This makes sense for anyone who does not want a large sum blocked on their card or whose card limit is tight.

Credit card and deposit combined – what does this mean for you?

  • No credit card

Look specifically for providers that accept debit cards and check the conditions in writing.

  • Credit card available, avoid deposit

Add fully comprehensive cover with no excess – the blocked amount is dropped or falls considerably.

  • Avoid both

This combination is rare. Check offers very carefully for hidden conditions and extra charges.

Check the conditions before booking

Which cards are accepted and how high the deposit is are set by each rental company and can change with the season. The rental conditions of the offer you choose always apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a car in Mallorca with an EC or debit card?

With some local providers, yes; most large international rental companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name.

What happens to the deposit if I return the car undamaged?

The blocked amount is released. Depending on the bank, it can take a few days for it to be credited back to the card.

Is “no deposit” really free?

No. The missing deposit buffer is usually offset by more expensive fully comprehensive insurance with no excess.

Does the card have to be in the driver’s name?

As a rule, yes. Cards belonging to people travelling with you are usually not accepted at the desk.
