S'Albufera Natural Park near Alcúdia

The largest wetland in the Balearic Islands lies directly behind the bay of Alcúdia: car-free, flat and the best alternative to a beach day in the north.

The bird hides are on flat paths and can also be reached with a pushchair.

Quick answer

What is s'Albufera?

A protected wetland of canals, reed beds and shallow stretches of water between Alcúdia and Can Picafort. The park is car-free, the paths are flat with a gravel surface, and there are bird hides along the canals. A free visitor permit for entry is available at the visitor centre.

How a visit works

You park at the entrance on the Alcúdia–Can Picafort road, then a bridge leads into the park. All paths start from the visitor centre. As there are no facilities inside, pack water, sun protection and, in summer, insect repellent. Dogs are not allowed.

Route Duration Profile Suitable for
Short loop at the visitor centre approx. 1 hr flat, wide gravel paths Families with small children, a short stop
Loop via the bird hides 2–3 hrs flat, partly open with no shade Birdwatching, photography
Long loop by bike 2–4 hrs flat, longer distances between the hides Active visitors arriving from Alcúdia or Can Picafort

What there is to see

S'Albufera is considered one of the most important bird areas in the western Mediterranean. Herons, rails, ducks and birds of prey are present all year round, joined by migratory birds in spring and autumn. If you are less interested in species than in landscape, you will find above all one thing: a quiet, wide expanse a few minutes from the hotel zone.

Getting there

From Port d'Alcúdia and Can Picafort, the park can be reached by bike in 15 to 25 minutes via the cycle path along the bay; the scheduled buses between the two towns stop near the park. By car, there are only a few parking spaces at the entrance, and these are taken in the mornings in summer.

Frequently asked questions about s'Albufera

Does s'Albufera Natural Park charge an entry fee?

Entry is free. A visitor permit is issued at the visitor centre, which you carry with you – so the route always leads there first.

Can you drive into the park?

No. The park is car-free; you park on the road between Alcúdia and Can Picafort and continue on foot or by bike.

Is s'Albufera suitable for children?

Yes. The paths are flat, wide and without inclines, and the bird hides are easy for children to use. Pushchairs work, but shade is scarce on the open sections.

When can you see the most birds?

In the early morning and in the last hour before sunset. Over the year, March to May and September to October are richest in species, because that is when migration across the Mediterranean takes place.

Do you need to bring binoculars?

It makes sense, yes, otherwise many sightings remain vague. Even without binoculars, the park is still worthwhile as a quiet, level walk away from the beach crowds.
