In short
Restaurants in Alcúdia old town
Alcúdia’s old town lies around two kilometres inland from the harbour and is the more traditional part of the town: Mallorcan celler cuisine, tapas bars around the Plaça, a few modern gastrobars and cafés – no sea views, but open all year and on average cheaper than the beach promenade.
If you are staying in Port d'Alcúdia, you almost automatically eat on the promenade in the evening. The short trip to the old town is still worthwhile: the lanes inside the medieval town wall are car-free in the evening, the menus are more Spanish and prices are usually a notch below those on the waterfront.
The three styles are clearly distinct. Celler restaurants serve hearty island cuisine – frit mallorquí, arròs brut, stews, often in vaulted rooms. The tapas bars around the main square are the liveliest part and work well for groups. On top of that, there are a few more modern gastrobars with Mediterranean menus and reliable vegetarian options.
On market days – Tuesday and Sunday mornings – the old town changes completely: there is more street food between the stalls than restaurant service, and the cafés on the edges make for a better break.
Some open all year Some seasonal only
Practical tips
- Park at the edge of the town wall; the old town lanes are narrow and partly closed to traffic in the evening.
- In summer, book the terraces on the Plaça for 20:00 or later.
- In winter, more stays open in the old town than at the harbour – the reverse of high season.
- There is a market on Tuesday and Sunday mornings: plan for a snack rather than a full meal.
- Mallorcans eat late – before 20:00 you will have the place almost to yourself, which is an advantage with children.
