Lluc Monastery: Mallorca’s most important place of pilgrimage
People have been making pilgrimages to the Black Madonna of Lluc since the 13th century – today many also come for the boys’ choir that sings in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana.
In brief
Lluc Monastery: Mallorca’s most important place of pilgrimage
Lluc Monastery in the Serra de Tramuntana is Mallorca’s most important place of pilgrimage and houses the statue of the Black Madonna “La Moreneta”, a museum since 1952 and a botanical garden since 1956. Lluc is also known for the Escolania de Lluc boys’ choir, whose traditional performance time during the school year is 13:30; in summer there is usually a break, so check lluc.net before your visit.
Museum and botanical garden
The monastery’s museum has existed since 1952 and shows religious art as well as objects on the history of the pilgrimage site. The botanical garden was added in 1956 and complements the tour with a quiet outdoor area.
The Black Madonna “La Moreneta”
At the centre of the pilgrimage is the statue of the Black Madonna, which has been venerated since the 13th century and gives the church its status as the island’s most important place of pilgrimage.
Escolania de Lluc: the “Els Blauets” boys’ choir
The “Els Blauets” boys’ choir traditionally sings daily at 13:30 in the monastery church during the school year. In summer there is usually a break – check the current performance times directly at lluc.net before you travel.
The Gaudí connection: restoration work on the church
Antoni Gaudí was involved in restoration work on the monastery church, which gives Lluc an art-historical link to Palma’s cathedral as well as its religious one.
