Valldemossa Charterhouse: where Chopin and George Sand lived
A winter of illness, a borrowed piano and a scandal in a strictly Catholic village – this became Chopin's most famous Mallorcan episode.
Quick answers
Valldemossa Charterhouse: where Chopin and George Sand lived
The Charterhouse of Valldemossa is the former monastery where the composer Frédéric Chopin spent the winter of 1838/39 with George Sand. Today visitors can see the Chopin cell with his Pleyel upright piano, the royal rooms of King Sancho's Palace and an 18th-century pharmacy; check opening hours and admission prices directly before your visit.
The Chopin and George Sand cell
In the winter of 1838/39 the composer Frédéric Chopin moved into one of the cells of the former charterhouse together with the writer George Sand. The reason was his lung disease, for which a mild winter climate had been recommended.
Today the cell contains Chopin's Pleyel upright piano and personal mementoes recalling this short stay, which had lasting consequences for literature and music.
Royal rooms of King Sancho's Palace
The adjoining King Sancho's Palace dates from the 14th century and shows living quarters from the time when the complex was still a royal residence, before it became a Carthusian monastery.
18th-century pharmacy
Another highlight of the tour is the historic 18th-century monastery pharmacy with its original jars and shelves – a rare record of monastic medicine on the island.
Chopin Festival at the Charterhouse
Since 1930, piano concerts in honour of Chopin have been held in summer in the rooms and courtyard of the Charterhouse. Details of this festival are on our separate page on the Chopin Festival Valldemossa.
