Serra de Tramuntana (north-west)
Sóller
Sóller is a small town in north-west Mallorca, set in a valley shaped by orange groves between the Serra de Tramuntana and the sea. It can be reached on the historic narrow-gauge railway from Palma and is well suited to hiking, culture and holidays without a hire car.
Hiking Culture & town Couples Nature Without a hire car
The wooden train links Sóller with the harbour and Palma.
Sóller is not a holiday resort but a town with its own everyday life: market days, schools, craft workshops and cafés around the Plaça Constitució. For centuries it was easier to get from the valley to France by ship than over the mountains to Palma – hence the Modernista façades financed with citrus and trading money. If you stay here, you can combine hikes, the train, the tram and the harbour without your own car.

What makes Sóller special
Plaça Constitució and Sant Bartomeu
The main square, with the church façade remodelled in Modernista style by Joan Rubió, a pupil of Gaudí, is both a meeting place and the tram's terminus.
Ferrocarril de Sóller
The wooden train from 1912 takes just over an hour from Palma through thirteen tunnels into the valley. Seats are scarce in the high season – it pays to travel early.
Hike to Fornalutx
Along cobbled paths and olive terraces you reach one of the island's best-preserved mountain villages in around an hour.
Oranges and olive oil
The valley lives from citrus growing. Freshly squeezed juice, marmalades and oil from local mills are not souvenir goods here but everyday products.
