Cellers on Mallorca: eating where the wine used to be stored

Big barrels, long tables, hearty food – the most honest place for island classics.

All topics: Food & Drink

The cellers in Inca stand for hearty Mallorcan food at moderate prices.

The short answer

Cellers on Mallorca: eating where the wine used to be stored

Cellers are former wine cellars that now serve as restaurants for traditional Mallorcan cuisine. Inca has the highest concentration of them. Main courses usually cost 12 to 22 euros, often as a menú del día (set lunch menu) at lunchtime.

You can recognise a celler by its built-in wine barrels and its short, unchanging menu. What is served is what the island has always eaten: lechona (suckling pig), frit, sopes, arròs brut.

The restaurants are busiest at lunchtime, especially on Sundays and market days. On Dijous Bo in Inca in November, you won't get a table without a reservation.

Practical tips

  • Come at lunchtime – several cellers are closed in the evening.
  • Lechona is roasted subject to availability; it is worth phoning ahead to ask.
  • Choose the bar area rather than the dining room if you are in a hurry.
