Eating out in Mallorca: three things you should know

  • Mealtimes: lunch is usually eaten between 1.30 and 3.30 pm, dinner from around 9 pm. In the resorts many kitchens open earlier; in villages some close between lunch and dinner.
  • Menú del día: on weekday lunchtimes many restaurants offer a set menu with a starter, main course, dessert or coffee and often a drink – usually much cheaper than à la carte.
  • Tipping: a small tip is customary but not a must. The consumer organisation Consubal gives 5 to 6 per cent as a guideline; leaving cash on the little dish with the bill is more common than saying “keep the change”. If you want them to keep the change, say “Está bien”.
