The short answer

Fish and seafood on Mallorca: price, freshness, pitfalls

On Mallorca, fresh fish is charged by weight, usually between 60 and 110 euros per kilo. Restaurants at working fishing ports such as Portocolom, Cala Figuera and Port d'Andratx are reliable.

The biggest price difference comes not from the restaurant but from the type of fish. Dorada (sea bream) and lubina (sea bass) are inexpensive; gambas rojas (red prawns) and dentón (dentex) are considerably more expensive.

Where the menu lists 30 types of fish all year round, frozen produce is involved. Short daily menus are the better sign.

Practical tips

  • Before ordering, have the price per kilo and the approximate weight confirmed.
  • Order the 'pescado del día' (catch of the day) rather than choosing from the standard menu.
  • Eat at lunchtime: the full catch of the day is available then.
