Health insurance in Mallorca: EHIC & cover abroad
This page explains what the European Health Insurance Card covers in Mallorca and where its cover ends. It explains the difference between public and private treatment and shows which elements additional travel health insurance typically covers. It is no substitute for individual insurance or legal advice.
In short
Is the EHIC enough for a holiday in Mallorca?
In principle, the EHIC covers medically necessary treatment within the Spanish public health system under the rules that apply there. Private doctors’ surgeries and private clinics are not automatically included. If you use private practices or want repatriation to be covered, you will usually need additional cover for that.
EHIC in the public health system
The card is printed on the back of the German health insurance card. You present it within the public system – i.e. at the Centro de Salud or at a public hospital. Billing follows Spanish rules; co-payments, as also apply to people insured in Spain, may be charged.
Private treatment
German-speaking practices for holidaymakers and private clinics often work on a private basis. There, you are typically billed directly and the EHIC does not apply automatically. Before treatment, ask about costs, which insurance is accepted and reimbursement options.
Repatriation
Medically accompanied repatriation to Germany is typically not part of the EHIC. It is one of the benefits that private travel health insurance covers depending on the policy – look for the wording “medically advisable” rather than “medically necessary” and check for exclusions.
Additional travel health insurance
Whether it is worthwhile depends on how you travel: if you are planning higher-risk activities, travelling with children or value private medical care, it closes the gaps. Things worth checking are the scope of cover, the excess, the maximum duration per trip and the rules on repatriation.
Bills and reimbursement
Keep all bills, medical reports and proofs of payment and submit them after your trip. For private treatment, a detailed invoice showing the diagnosis and itemised services is important – flat-rate receipts often lead to queries.
