How long is the flight to Mallorca?

Mallorca can be reached by direct flight from many Central European airports in just a few hours. But the pure flight time is only part of the travel day – on top of that come check-in, security and above all the transfer from Palma Airport to your resort.

Almost all Mallorca flights land at Palma Airport (PMI).

Why does the return flight sometimes take longer or shorter?

Experience shows that outbound and return flights differ – rarely because of the distance itself, usually because of external influences.

  • Wind

Headwinds or tailwinds over France and the Mediterranean can change the flight time by several minutes – in both directions.

  • Flight route

Depending on airspace clearances, weather fronts and traffic volume, the aircraft flies different routes that turn out shorter or longer.

  • Air traffic routing

Holding patterns before landing in Palma or at your home airport, separation and approach and departure routes influence the actual time in the air.

  • Weather

Thunderstorms, strong winds or visibility conditions can force diversions or delays on take-off and landing.

How long does the whole travel day take?

The flight time is only one part – the complete travel day is considerably longer and should be kept in mind when planning.

It is better to plan five to eight hours for the complete journey from home to your hotel room – depending on departure airport, luggage and destination. That way you set off relaxed and arrive without time pressure.

  • Check-in

You must be at the departure airport in good time – with checked luggage usually about two hours before departure.

  • Security

Waiting times at security vary greatly depending on time of day, season and how busy the airport is.

  • Luggage

Checking in at the desk and waiting at the carousel in Palma take extra time – especially in high season.

  • Boarding & taxiing

Boarding, pushback and taxiing to the runway often take 20 to 40 minutes before the actual flight time.

  • Transfer

From Palma Airport to your resort, what is sometimes the largest share of time comes after landing.

How long is the transfer from the airport to the resort?

The transfer depends heavily on the region. The following values are rough guide values under normal traffic conditions – congestion, seasonal traffic and the exact location can change them.

Whether hire car, organised transfer, taxi or bus offers the best compromise between price, time and convenience depends on your resort – not on the flight time.

  • Palma / Playa de Palma

Very close to the airport, often approx. 15 to 30 minutes.

  • South-west

Magaluf, Palmanova, Peguera or Port d’Andratx are approx. 30 to 60 minutes away.

  • North

Experience shows that Alcúdia and Port de Pollença take approx. 50 to 80 minutes.

  • East

Cala d’Or and Cala Millor are approx. 55 to 75 minutes away, Cala Ratjada in the north-east up to approx. 80 minutes.

  • Tramuntana

Valldemossa, Deià or Sóller are approx. 30 to 60 minutes from the airport, depending on the route.

Which Mallorca resorts are particularly conveniently located for the airport?

If you value short transfers, choose resorts close to Palma Airport (PMI).

  • Palma

The capital is only a few minutes from the airport – ideal for city breaks and short trips.

  • Playa de Palma

Arenal, Can Pastilla and the Playa de Palma are the shortest transfer destinations on the island.

  • South-western resorts

Peguera, Santa Ponsa and Magaluf can be reached without a long drive – usually in under an hour.

Direct flight or connecting flight?

Mallorca can be reached by direct flight from many airports – a connection rarely makes sense.

As Palma de Mallorca is served directly from practically all larger German, Austrian and Swiss airports, a direct flight is usually the simpler and faster choice. Connecting flights lengthen the travel day by the waiting time at the transfer airport and carry the risk of delays or missed connections.

Considering a connection only makes sense if your home airport does not offer a direct connection, the direct flight is unsuitable or considerably more expensive on your preferred date, or you specifically want to use a particular airline.
