The short answer

What should you do after a theft in Mallorca?

First block your cards, then report the theft to the police, then inform your insurer. The police report ( Denuncia ) is the proof that insurers and authorities usually require – without it, reimbursement and replacement documents typically become difficult.

Who is responsible?

Responsibility depends on the location: in Palma and the larger towns the Policía Nacional takes reports, outside the towns and on the coast the Guardia Civil. The Policía Local is the local police force and helps with local incidents or refers you to the responsible authority.

Reporting a theft

Go to a police station as soon as possible. Helpful are: an identity document, the exact time and place, a list of the stolen items with serial numbers, photos and – if available – receipts. You will receive a copy of the report; keep it for your insurer and your return journey.

Lost passport or ID card – the reporting part

Even a simple loss without theft should be reported so that the document is registered as missing. The actual replacement document is not issued by the police but by the German diplomatic mission: details on German Consulate Palma.

Blocking cards

Cards are blocked via your bank or the card issuer – you will find the number in your banking app or on your bank’s website. Note this number down before your trip, separately from your wallet, and check your latest account transactions after blocking.
