The short answer

What does the German consulate on Mallorca help with?

The consulate is the point of contact for German nationals in consular emergencies: lost or stolen identity documents, arrest, serious illness, death or loss of contact with relatives. It issues replacement documents for the journey home and puts you in touch with the right contacts – but it does not replace your insurance, a lawyer or your tour operator.

Visits by appointment only

Visits to the consulate are only possible by prior appointment. Exception: new passports and identity cards can be collected without an appointment, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 09:15.

Lost passport or ID card

Report the loss to the police first – the report is usually needed for the rest of the process. How this works and which police force is responsible is explained on Police, theft & lost documents. The consulate then takes care of the documents.

According to current official information, if an identity document is lost or stolen, you can often travel home with a copy or scan of the document together with a Spanish loss report. One place you can file a loss report is the Policía Nacional at Palma airport. Whether this is sufficient in an individual case is decided by the airline and the border authorities – if in doubt, check with the consulate early on.

Replacement documents

For the journey home, an emergency travel document can typically be issued in place of a passport. Helpful for this are: the police report, a current biometric passport photo, details of your identity and copies of the lost documents. Expect to pay a fee and allow enough time before your flight home.

Arrest

If you are arrested, you can ask for the consulate to be informed. It can contact your relatives, explain how the proceedings work and provide lists of lawyers. It does not provide legal representation.

Hospital stays and deaths

In the event of serious illness, the consulate can inform relatives and help with communication with the insurer and the hospital. In the event of a death, it assists with the necessary formalities; repatriation and costs are handled by the insurer and the funeral director.

What the consulate cannot do

  • It does not pay medical, hotel, legal or travel-home costs
  • No legal advice and no representation in court
  • No intervention in Spanish investigations or proceedings
  • No arranging of accommodation or flights

Prepare in advance

Before you travel, make digital copies of your ID card, passport and proof of insurance and keep them separately from the originals. This speeds up any replacement process considerably.
