The market in Santanyí takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Santanyí lies a few kilometres inland and therefore does not live solely from day tourism. Sandstone from the local quarries also shapes the cathedral in Palma; in the town itself it creates a very uniform streetscape. As a base, Santanyí works for travellers who want to drive to a different cove each morning and return in the evening to a town with restaurants and everyday life – provided you have a car.

What makes Santanyí special

Weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays

The market fills the square in front of the church with fruit, cheese, olives, ceramics and textiles. On Saturdays it is bigger and much busier.

Sandstone and townscape

Marès stone from the quarries around Santanyí was used for churches all over Mallorca. In the town it gives the façades a warm, uniform look.

Coves within reach

Cala Santanyí, Cala Llombards, Caló des Moro and the Mondragó Natural Park are all within a 15-minute drive – no other town in the south has so many coves this close together.

Galleries and crafts

Galleries and studios have settled around the Plaça Major, many showing works by artists who live permanently on the island.

Trip to the harbour

The municipality includes the fishing harbour of Cala Figuera: a two-armed cove with boathouses (escars) right on the water and fish restaurants – one of them in a former church from 1938. There is no sandy beach there; people swim at Cala Santanyí, around 1.8 km away. Bus 516 runs towards Campos.

Getting around

Everything in the town is within walking distance, but the coves are four to ten kilometres away. Without a car or bike, a beach day takes some planning.

Bus connections: Regional buses to Palma, Felanitx and Colònia de Sant Jordi, plus seasonal services to the coves – much less frequent than on the north coast.
