Finca and country hotels in Mallorca

Few rooms, peace and landscape – in return, a hire car, access via farm tracks and dinner at the hotel.

Agroturismo and finca hotel are legally different categories.

The short answer

What distinguishes a finca hotel from a beach hotel?

Finca hotels are in the island's interior or in the foothills of the Tramuntana, usually have between six and thirty rooms and no beach access. They are run as an agroturismo – on an estate that is still farmed – or as a hotel rural. They are hardly usable without a hire car, but they are also open in spring and autumn.

Agroturismo or hotel rural

The categories are legally defined in the Balearic Islands and tell you something about the character.

  • Agroturismo

The house belongs to an estate that is still farmed with almonds, olives or vines. The number of rooms is limited, the character rural and quiet.

  • Hotel rural

A historic country house without the farming requirement, often with a restaurant, spa and a little more hotel service.

  • Petit hotel in a village

A small hotel in the centre of Santanyí, Sineu or Artà – with restaurants and the market on the doorstep instead of fields all around.

  • Holiday finca for exclusive rental

Not a hotel category but a rental property without service – often the cheaper option for groups and families.

Who a country hotel suits

  • Couples in the low season

From March to May the almond trees and wild flowers are in bloom, the island is empty and many country hotels are open while beach hotels close.

  • Walkers and cyclists

The Tramuntana foothills around Alaró, Bunyola and Campanet are starting points for tours – being able to set off in the morning without a drive is a real advantage.

  • Travellers on a touring plan

If you want to see the island and its culture, stay centrally in Es Pla, with a maximum of 45 minutes' drive to almost all coasts.

  • Less suitable with young children

No beach on the doorstep, long distances and usually no children's programme – here a family hotel in the north is the more practical choice.

Check the access

Many fincas are at the end of unpaved tracks (camí). With a very low hire car and in the dark, the last stretch is unpleasant – ask for the exact directions to be confirmed in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is an agroturismo?

A legally regulated type of accommodation on an estate that is still farmed. The number of rooms is limited and the business must continue to be used for agriculture.

Do you need a hire car for a finca hotel?

Yes. Country hotels are outside the towns, there is no regular bus service and taxis are expensive and not always available.

When is the best time for a country hotel?

Spring and autumn. In high summer, the interior of the island is several degrees hotter than the coast.

Are there restaurants nearby in the countryside?

Not always. Many hotels offer dinner; otherwise the next village is often ten to twenty minutes away.
