Family hotels in Mallorca
It's not the star rating that matters, but the route to the beach, the water depth and the room layout.
What matters is less the category than the route to the beach.
The short answer
Where are the best family hotels in Mallorca?
The most family-friendly hotels are in the Bay of Alcúdia, Can Picafort, Playa de Muro and Port de Pollença in the north, and in Sa Coma and Cala Millor in the east. There the sandy beach shelves very gently, the promenades are pushchair-friendly and the walk from the hotel to the water is short.
Selection criteria at a glance
- Best regions
- North (Alcúdia, Playa de Muro), east (Sa Coma, Cala Millor)
- Getting into the water
- Gently shelving sand instead of a rocky cove with steps
- Route to the beach
- Under 300 m on the level – metres of climb count more than kilometres
- Rooms
- Family rooms or connecting doors instead of an extra bed
- Best time to travel
- June and September: warm water, fewer crowds
- Low season
- Many hotels in the north close from November to April
Five criteria that really count on a family holiday
You can check these points before booking – unlike the atmosphere in the kids' club.
-
The actual route to the beach
Map distances don't show steps and slopes. In cove resorts, many hotels sit above the water; with a pushchair and beach bag, the walk back at midday becomes a real effort.
-
Water depth at the beach
In the Bay of Alcúdia, you are still only hip-deep after 30 metres. At rocky coves in the south-east, by contrast, it gets deep quickly.
-
Pool area rather than number of pools
What matters is a separate shallow area with shade, not the total number of pools. Slides are often only open at set times.
-
Room layout
Family rooms with a separate sleeping area or two connecting rooms make the difference between an early bedtime and everyone switching the lights off together.
-
Meal times
Early dinner from 18:00, snacks in the afternoon and a quiet breakfast area are more relevant in practice than the number of buffet stations.
Where family hotels in Mallorca are located
-
Bay of Alcúdia and Playa de Muro
The classic family region: kilometres of gently shelving sandy beach, a wide promenade, plenty of hotel infrastructure and the s'Albufera nature reserve as a bad-weather option.
-
Can Picafort
Somewhat simpler and more moderately priced than Playa de Muro, with many apartment hotels and self-catering options.
-
Sa Coma and Cala Millor
In the east, also with gently shelving sandy beaches, shorter beaches and quieter evenings than in the north.
-
Port de Pollença
Quieter, with shallow water in the bay, cycle paths and a promenade that works without a car too.
Beware of “close to the beach”
The term is not protected. Check the address on the map and look at the elevation – in Cala d'Or, Cala Ratjada and Camp de Mar in particular, many hotels sit 30 to 60 metres above the bay.

Frequently asked questions
Which region in Mallorca is best for families?
The north around Alcúdia and Playa de Muro. The sandy beach there shelves very gently, the promenade is pushchair-friendly and the hotels are on the level with the water.
Is all-inclusive worth it for families?
Mainly in large resorts in the north and east, where restaurants outside are further away. In places with lots of restaurants, such as Port de Pollença or Palma, half board is often the better choice.
When is the best time to travel with children?
June and September. The water is warm, the heat still bearable, and beaches and roads are much emptier than in August.
What should you look for when choosing a room?
A separate sleeping area or connecting rooms. In practice, an extra bed in a standard room means everyone goes to bed at the same time.
