Aparthotels and holiday apartments in Mallorca
Your own kitchen, more space, less service – the cheapest option for longer stays and families.
Aparthotels pay off above all for longer stays and with children.
The short answer
Who is an aparthotel in Mallorca worth it for?
An aparthotel is worth it for stays of about ten days or more, for families with young children and for travellers who don't want to eat in a restaurant every evening. The kitchenette saves on breakfast and lunch; in return, there is no buffet, no room service and often no daily cleaning.

Aparthotel, holiday apartment or hotel?
The three types differ mainly in service and type of contract.
-
Aparthotel
Run as a hotel with reception, pool and cleaning, but with apartments that have a kitchenette. Bookable like a hotel, often with breakfast or all-inclusive available as an add-on.
-
Holiday apartment
Privately let, more space and individuality, but with key handover, final cleaning and a deposit. In Mallorca, every legal rental needs an ETV licence number.
-
Hotel with half board
For short stays of a week with two travellers, usually the more convenient option and hardly more expensive on paper.
-
Finca or country house
The holiday-apartment option in the island's interior – lovely, but not practical without a hire car.
What to look out for when choosing
-
Kitchen equipment
Two hobs and a kettle are enough for breakfast, not for a family meal. An oven, dishwasher and washing machine are rarely provided as standard.
-
Air conditioning and times
In many complexes the air conditioning only runs seasonally or at set times. In July and August this is a real comfort factor.
-
Supermarket within walking distance
Self-catering without a car only works if a supermarket is a few minutes away – that is the case in Can Picafort and Port d'Alcúdia, but often not in scattered locations.
-
Check the licence number
For private holiday apartments, the listing should state an ETV number. If it is missing, the rental is not authorised and the booking is risky.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an aparthotel and a holiday apartment?
An aparthotel is run like a hotel – with reception, pool and cleaning, but with a kitchenette in the room. A holiday apartment is let privately, usually with a deposit and final cleaning.
Is self-catering cheaper in Mallorca?
Significantly so for longer stays and with children. Breakfast and lunch from the supermarket make a noticeable daily saving; many people still eat out in the evening.
Do I need a hire car for an aparthotel?
Not in places like Port d'Alcúdia, Can Picafort or Cala Ratjada, if the supermarket and beach are within walking distance. Inland, however, you always do.
What is an ETV number?
The Balearic licence number for tourist rentals. Legal holiday apartments show it in the listing; without a number, the rental is not authorised.
