D.O. Binissalem & Pla i Llevant: Mallorca's wine-growing
Two protected designations of origin, two different landscapes: Binissalem in the centre of the island and Pla i Llevant in the east shape Mallorca's wine-growing.
In brief
D.O. Binissalem & Pla i Llevant: Mallorca's wine-growing
D.O. Binissalem and D.O. Pla i Llevant are Mallorca's two official wine-growing regions, each with different lead grape varieties – Binissalem in the centre built around Manto Negro, Pla i Llevant in the east with Callet and Fogoneu. Wines from outside these regions carry the designation IGP Vi de la Terra Mallorca.
D.O. Binissalem: the island's oldest D.O.
D.O. Binissalem was recognised in 1991, making it Mallorca's oldest designation of origin. The growing area lies centrally at the foot of the Tramuntana; the lead variety is the native red Manto Negro, complemented by the white Prensal Blanc.
D.O. Pla i Llevant: from Vino de la Tierra to D.O.
D.O. Pla i Llevant in the east of the island was recognised as a designation of origin in 2001, having previously been classed as Vino de la Tierra. The defining varieties here are Callet, Fogoneu and Giró Ros, complemented by international varieties.
The main bodegas in both regions
Numerous bodegas offering wine tastings and tours have established themselves in both growing areas. For visits and tastings it is advisable to book ahead with the bodega concerned, as opening hours and capacities vary.
